Christmas Events at Greenway

Santa's Grotto

Greenway held its annual Santa's Grotto on Thursday 8 December and, as always, the event was a huge success. The Centre was filled with children and parents all eager to visit Santa and have their photo taken. Fun and games were had in the Drop-In and a buffet lunch was served by members of the  Greenway Board of Directors.

Thanks go to the staff from Greenway's Childcare Department for all their hard work, and also to Santa for fitting Greenway into his busy schedule.

Christmas Dinner

The Board of Directors hosted a dinner for the staff and volunteers at Greenway on Friday 9 December.

Everyone who was able to attend had a great evening and we would like to thank Mae and Liz for lovely meal.

Christmas Lunch

This year Greenway held its annual Christmas lunch on two days; Tuesday 13 December and Thursday 15 December. Both events were well attended and everyone enjoyed the festive food provided by Julieanne and her 'kitchen crew'. Lunch was served by Greenway volunteers and the great atmosphere definitely got everyone in a holiday mood.

Women's Information Day, November 2011

'Sharing Our Stories - Across the Divide'

Greenway Women's Centre hosted the Women's Information Northern Ireland (WINI) November Information Day on Tuesday 15 November 2011 and more than 80 people attended the event.

The Information Day had a cross community/cross border theme, highlighting a recently completed cross border learning and sharing project, 'Cross Border Women's Collective'.

The project involved women from three different groups: Ardmonagh Community & Family Centre in Belfast, Atlantic View Community Development Partnership in Ballyshannon and Ballybeen Women's Centre. Over the past eighteen months these groups have worked together to develop and produce a DVD entitled, 'The Women's Story', which gives a glimpse of women's lives before, after and during the Troubles.

The Information Day showcased this DVD, a collection of reminiscences from women on both sides of the border and from different sides of the religious and political spectrum in Northern Ireland. Beginning in the late 60's/early 70's and moving forward to the present day, the DVD highlighted the various struggles faced by women over the years, and the result was a powerful and moving story.

A copy of the DVD, 'The Women's Story', is available to borrow, on request, from Greenway Women's Centre.

Family Forum

Greenway held it's first Family Forum event in the Centre on Wednesday 9 November 2011.

This event was the first in a series of bi-monthly focus groups to be facilitated by Greenway which will ensure that parents, grandparents and carers can contribute their views, needs and feedback on the Family Support Services offered within the Centre.

The event was well attended and everyone enjoyed taking part. The play area, which Childcare staff had set up in the Drop-In area, also proved very poplular!

Volunteers from the Greenway Drop-In provided a healthy, nutritious and delicious lunch for the group.

The next Family Forum event will be held in January 2012.

If you would like more information on any aspect of Greenway's Family Support Services, please contact Family Support Facilitator, Isobel Loughran.

Women's Information Day, October 2011

'Breast Cancer Awareness'

On Tuesday 18 October Greenway Women's Centre hosted the WINI Information Day. The theme of the day was 'Breast Cancer Awareness' and the event was a great success, with over eighty people attending.

Mary Frances McCullough gave a talk and informal demonstration on breast examination and also gave details of the Breast & Cervical Cancer Awareness programme being offered by WRDA.

Kim Warn, a two-time breast cancer survivor, then gave a very moving talk about the effect breast cancer has had on her life and she highlighted the importance of self-examination and getting even the smallest changes to your breasts checked out.

Stands on the day included Clear Pharmacy and Boots Pharmacy who provided health checks, such as blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and Ulster Cancer Foundation who brought along a scanner which showed the effects of sun damage on our skin. Patient and Client Council representatives were on hand to answer questions about health and social care and Liz Hanvey facilitated one-to-one and group sessions on massage, essential oils and meditation.

Outside, the Action Cancer BIG BUS was parked across from Greenway for the day, offering women aged between 40 and 47 years with the opportunity to have a mammogram and a personal health check.

Check out the Greenway Gallery for photos from this event.
